Why Does My Fish Tank Get Algae So Fast

13 Jun 2026 0 comentarios

Have you ever been there? You’ve just got your tank scrubbed, it looks perfect, and two days later…there is green algae covering the glass. There are so many people who freak out thinking that they must have done something wrong and blame their new, extremely powerful light. Don’t worry, though; you are definitely not alone when it comes to this algae problem. An algae bloom is indeed a "rite of passage" that virtually all fishkeepers must endure at some point.

The Lights Aren't the Main Culprit

A lot of people’s first reaction is " I put in new LEDs light, I'm surprised I have a bloom! " Which is actually how I reacted at first. But after experiencing this multiple times, I found out light is only the catalyst, not the cause of the problem. It really all has to do with balancing out your light hours, nutrients, and your cleaning regimen.

Let's say you leave your lights on longer than 10 hours a day, then algae might subtly absorb the nutrients from under your nose, before the plants can. Most veteran hobbyists believe it's more about light duration than light intensity, causing blooms. And using an extra-low wattage dimming system in your tank is nothing compared to keeping the light on for just 6-8 hours a day and keeping the tank away from any windows.

The Real Danger Lurks in the Substrate

The most overlooked aspect: the substrate (gravel or sand). Fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plant matter build up at the bottom of the tank and decay into the ideal nutrients for algae, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Beginners often just "scrub the glass" of the tank, unaware that there is a huge pile of nutrients sitting at the bottom that is responsible for creating unstoppable algae growth. Use a gravel cleaner aquarium (siphon) to remove this sediment. This is surprisingly simple to use; far less effort than scrubbing the glass every day.

Don't Slack Off on Glass Cleaning

The algae on the glass is annoying, but just a symptom. You can control it fairly easily, just doing a quick scrape with the aquarium magnetic cleaner when you're doing your morning walk around. Don't scrub it vigorously or remove all the algae; gradual, consistent removal works much better than aggressive cleaning. The problem is "ecological imbalance".

It's rarely a single problem that creates a major algae outbreak, rather a confluence of a number of minor problems-a little too much light, a little too much feeding, a missing water change. Each individually seem so small, but the system is slowly heading for out-of-equilibrium.

I've witnessed a great many new aquarists have major algae outbreaks by just changing the light spectrum, or just getting lazy with the water changes; a couple have turned the tank into "green wonderland" just because they forgot to gravel vacuum for two weeks! You will discover that moderate feeding, light control, and a regular cleaning schedule are more effective than any additive!

Aquatic Plants Are Your Natural Allies

For planted tanks, don't solely concentrate on the algae; concentrate on the plants. The plants outcompete the algae for nutrients, and if the plants are happy and healthy, the algae won't have a chance to spread. Balance out the lighting, the fertilizers, and plant growth, and the algae should stay under control naturally.

Final Thoughts

In fact, an algae bloom is not a disaster, but a signal from the ecosystem. Keeping the substrate clean on a regular basis by vacuuming the sediment out of the substrate and scraping off the algae from the glass, together with an appropriate control on light and feeding, the algae can be kept within a satisfactory range.

There is no point in killing all the algae in one; steady control is needed. An algae bloom is just a transitional phase; it will become a sweet dream once you figure out a stable routine.
