Best Small Fish for Nano Tanks (5–30L)

16 Jun 2026 0 comentarios

Nano aquariums between 5 and 30 Liters are extremely popular among fishkeeping newcomers and also those dedicated to the practice of aquascaping. They are easy to manage, provide excellent aesthetic value, and are ideal for small spaces like an office desk or an apartment.

While these small aquariums are popular, they are certainly not a place for "any type of small fish". What the nano aquarium lacks in terms of physical size, it compensates for with terms of stability, and keeping fish healthy in a small environment like a nano aquarium can be more complex than one would think. Water quality is susceptible to fluctuation faster, oxygen levels are a serious issue, and of course, over-stocking is something that cannot be overlooked.

In this article, Seaoura shall discuss some of the most popular small nano aquarium fish species (5-30 Liters) which have proven survival rates and aquarium-stable behavioral patterns.

Why Nano Tanks Are More Difficult Than They Look

Even though a small tank may appear less of a challenge, it can often be less stable than a larger one.

Within a 5-30L tank:

  • Wastes build up more rapidly
  • Oxygen depletion occurs more readily
  • Temperature changes more rapidly
  • If overfed, water deteriorates more quickly

As a result, not only will your fish choice play a key role in the success of a nano tank, but the system's stability, particularly the filter and the regular maintenance the tank receives. Most nano tank issues are not due to fish but to the instability of the water.

What Makes a Fish Suitable for Nano Tanks (5–30L)

Before picking a fish, one needs to know what nano-safe truly means.

A good nano fish has to have:

  1. a very small mature size. If the fish gets more than 3-4 cm, it will likely overcrowd the nano tank and produce more waste.
  2. non-aggressive nature. High aggression and high territory needs can very quickly crash the confined system.
  3. low bio-load. A nano tank can only deal with so much waste or require so much food.
  4. adaptability to variations. The fish can live through small variations in temp and water parameters.

Below are some of the most reliable species for nano aquarium setups.

1. Betta Fish (Best for Solo Nano Tanks)

Betta fish are perhaps the most popular selection for nano tanks, and can do very well in tanks of 10-20 Liters.

They are a very smart, entertaining, and most of all, beautiful creature; their territorial nature dictates that they should always be housed by themselves.

With a proper environment, soft current, and stable temperature, the betta is quite a long-lived animal.

2. Chili Rasbora (Best for Planted Nano Tanks)

Chili Rasboras are some of the smallest schooling fish in the aquarium trade.

They will be happiest in a well-planted nano tank and enjoy gentle, static water conditions. A shoal of 6-10 is a good size. Good for aquascapes, which aim for a natural look with plenty of color contrast.

3. Endler Guppy (Most Active Nano Fish)

Endler Guppies are very energetic, robust, colorful fish that are very suitable for nano 20-30L.

They are very hardy and breed rapidly, so controlling the population would be a necessary consideration. They do very well in a tank that is oxygen-rich and stable.

4. Ember Tetra (Best Beginner Schooling Fish)

Ember tetras are placid schoolers whose beautiful orange color really shows off a planted tank nicely.

They are somewhat hardy and appreciate stable water conditions and correct group numbers. A planted nano tank will do them a lot of justice and showcase their coloring & behavior.

5. Pygmy Corydoras (Best Bottom Cleaner for Nano Tanks)

Pygmy Corydoras are peaceful, small, bottom-dwelling fish that help to keep the tank clean. They should always be kept in groups, and a tank up to 25-30L seems ideal. Use a soft substrate to avoid damaging delicate barbs.

6. Celestial Pearl Danio (High Visual Impact Nano Fish)

A common feature for aquascapers, the Celestial Pearl Danio, or the CPD, is famous for its beautiful pearl-white spots. It lives well in planted community tanks and needs some places for cover. They are a little bit timid; thus, stable, less-stressed tanks are ideal for them.

7. Neon Tetra (Only for Stable 30L+ Tanks)

Neon Tetras are such a traditional aquarium fish and something that should definitely be approached with caution with regard to nano tanks.

A 30L and above setup that has stable parameters is generally better with a schooling group. Due to limited space to swim with a nano setup, it can make them stressed.

8. Least Killifish (Best Micro Livebearer)

One of the smallest livebearing fish within the hobby, the Least Killifish is both very peaceful and adaptable, so it will suit an aquarist of any skill level. They will tolerate small stable nano aquariums due to their low bioload.

9. Scarlet Badis (Advanced Nano Fish Choice)

Scarlet Badis are small but aggressive, and need a bit of experience to keep well. They take live and frozen food and do not do very well on flake. An ideal fish for a seasoned nano tankkeeper who wants a challenge.

10. Otocinclus Catfish (Best Nano Algae Eater)

The otocinclus is a very small fish; they primarily eat algae and are often introduced into planted nano tanks.

These are extremely placid fish that excel at natural alga control.

These fish should only be introduced into established tanks that have a decent amount of biofilm and algae growth.

Recommended Nano Tank Setup for Fish Health

It is more about the balance of the system than what species are in it when a successful nano tank is created. You'll need gentle filtration. Sponge filters or low-flow internal filters usually work best to keep the biological balance maintained.

Temperature stability also comes into play here. You will need a small heater in your nano tank, especially if keeping tropical fish. Lighting will need to be relatively low, particularly if it is a planted nano tank. Easy-to-maintain plants like moss, anubias, and Java fern work best to keep the ecosystem balanced.

Common Mistakes in Nano Fish Keeping

Several mistakes are repeated often and are the cause of many a nano aquarium's demise.

Overfeeding is probably the number one problem, as wasted food quickly turns the water foul. Schooling fish is another problem when kept in insufficient numbers, causing undue stress and abnormal behaviour.

Adding fish too early to an uncycled tank is the number one reason for the premature demise of many an aquarium. Overpowering the system with water flow systems causes needless stress.

Final Thoughts

Nano aquariums (5-30L) can offer great reward, but demand some planning in the long run. Correct fish, stable parameters, and non-overstocked is key. If maintained properly, even the small nano can become stable and pleasing. Stability, not fish selection, should be your priority when thinking long term.
