When you decide to keep hermit crabs as pets, you need to understand some basic requirements to ensure they lead a healthy and happy life. This article will introduce the fundamental needs of hermit crabs, especially for beginners.

1. Appropriate Container: Hermit crabs need a properly sized container, usually a glass or plastic tank. This container should provide enough space to accommodate all the hermit crabs and room for climbing and exploration.

2. Proper Temperature and Humidity: Hermit crabs are tropical animals and, therefore, require the right temperature and humidity. Ensure that the temperature in the container stays between 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C) and maintains a humidity level of around 70% to 80%.

3. Suitable Substrate: Substrate is crucial for hermit crabs to feel comfortable and secure. Use a non-toxic, fine-grained substrate like fine sand or coconut coir. The depth of the substrate should be enough to allow hermit crabs to dig and hide.

4. Freshwater and Saltwater: Hermit crabs need both freshwater and saltwater to meet their hydration and salinity requirements. Provide two bowls, one with freshwater and the other with saltwater. Ensure that these water sources are chlorine-free.

5. Proper Food: Hermit crabs are omnivores and can eat fruits, vegetables, seaweed, dried insects, shellfish, and other protein sources. Offer a variety of foods to ensure they get the required nutrition.

6. Suitable Hiding and Climbing Spots: Hermit crabs need hiding spots to retreat when necessary. Provide some caves or shelters and consider adding climbing spots like small pieces of wood or rocks.

7. Social Opportunities: Hermit crabs are social animals, so it's best not to keep them alone. They are happier and more active when they have companions of their own kind.
