I will start by saying I bought this light intentionally to butcher for DIY, so this review doesn't fully apply to the stock unit. I have an indoor lighting system that mimics outdoor light in real-time, currently used for plant lighting, but I wanted to tap into the same system for my aquarium, and this has been an ideal platform to start with.Quick notes on the build: I got the 24 watt version for up to 30 tanks. The rim to rim measurement of my tank is actually a hair over 31 and this spans it just fine, so know you have a tiny bit of wiggle room with the max size rating. 24 watts is WAAAAYYY more than enough for my 20 gallon long tank, more on that below. As far as water resistance, it's mild. Clearly not meant to be submerged at all, but can handle typical splashes and drips that come with being near an aquarium without issue. Build quality is fine and in the expected range for the price, and it sits squarely on my tank rim. The stock controller does not show any visible flicker. If you chop the little controller off you will find 5 wires: positive power (20VDC), then negatives for main white, red, green, and blue. I was a little surprised to find raw RGB, was expecting WS2812s, but that actually made my job easier. Using a RPi Pico to generate a 10kHz PWM control to some FETs, I now have fine 16 bit control over each channel.I used a light meter to calibrate a max value at tank bottom, which was quite low for my setup, around 15% of maximum power (24 watt version). The main array contains the white emitters, plus red, green, and blue discreet emitters built in for a nice color mix, though I did find it a bit blue-heavy for my environment. If you're growing coral or have a taller tank it would be better suited.I then calibrated a nice orange-y warm white via the RGB emitters, to complement and offset the coolness of the main array, and scaled the outputs to blend together. At sunrise and sunset, the warm emitters are dominant, and during the day they lower the average CCT to around 4500K. I also added some DC-fix window diffusion film to make the light softer and more spread out and reduce glare/reflection.With a mini DC-DC buck converter, I power the Pico right from the 20V input and now have a fully automated system that reproduces natural lighting conditions in real time. No worrying about schedules or adjusting for DST, no sudden big steps turning on/off.I feel comfortable recommending this light for the average person wanting a tank light, but know that it's likely overpowered unless you have a very high brightness setup. The included controller seems sufficient for most tasks, though I didn't play around with it much.
With how many power outages we have been having, the battery back up is genius!
I compared 3 different models of Seoura WRGB light and this version was selected based on the PAR, LUX and CRI. Although my favorite model has much more robust looking body, the CRI is lower than this one while it is using 84W for the lower LUX number. So basically, I went for the spec over the look.I have 10 tanks side by side in one row and this light is for the 3 tanks as the length of those 3 tanks is 48. As I am getting back to the aquarium hobby and growing aquatic plants in my shrimp tanks, I need a reliable light. For 12 deep tanks, you don't need such high lumen output. I don't find this light being overly bright at its 100%. Still, to avoid any possible algae issue I am running it at 90% for 9 hours and moon light for the next 5 hours at 50% as a night light. I don't care to use 24/7 programmed light so I can't comment on that function. Since you can customize the duration of day/night light, I am fully satisfied with that though how long it will last remains in question. I will likely purchase another 36 unit for my other 4 tanks as the total length of those tanks is 42. The wattage per LUX is really good.
